I have time to sew again! YAY. Booo - first shirring experience was a flop.

3rd October

Well, the Kitchen Tea i was planning is finished now, so i can get back to some serious sewing!
Thougth i would attempt some shirring last night!

This was my effort. Tried it on DD2 this morning and the shirring is too tight. I am thinking i had the stitch length too big? It fit her, but was tight.

The funny thing was, i began making it as a top for DD1 - and noticed it was turing out smaller, so it turned into one for DD2.

I also ran up some matching shorts. There is a closeup of the fabric i used as i am not sure how well the pattern will show up on the original!!
The other pair is some shorts for DD1 i ran up with an offcut of something i found!

I guess they are ok!! They are not bright as the pic. More an aqua colour.

Can anyone give me some tips for the shirring? What size fabric do you use in relation to the childs chest measurement? What length do you use in relation to the finished length you want?

Great sewing Liv, the outfit looks fantastic, well done!
I double Ellyse's chest measurement, it is 50cm, so front and back are 50 cm each. As Marie said I use my machine to gather it too, but I don't change any tension or stitch length (maybe I should be??) Doubling works well, I tried to make it less (40cm front and back) and it is too tight.
Good luck and look forward to seeing your next creation!

Liv the outfit looks great (but obviously not if it won't fit). I am going to attempt shirring as well so can't offer any tips. Good luck and I will be watching with interest after all the talk on shirring by everyone

I will join you in the BOO to shirring club. But I am determined to master it, so will be giving it another go following Andreas advice.

I also double the chest measurement and added a bit more for safety. So I did 55 cms for the front and another 55 cms for the back. Make sure you add a bit more for length too as shirring will make it shorter. My machine does the job for me, I just sew in a straight line, well I TRY to sew in a straight line LOL.
